Mozambique - 4 x 4 Diving Safari

A guided 4x4 dive safari that takes you to those hard to get to places - mantas, whales, dolphins, sharks and much more - explore Mozambique’s tracks and trails - Praia de Jangamo, Inhambane, Maputo, Inhaca island, Parque de Malongane and Hluhluwe Game Reserve!

Chartered and scheduled dates available.Click here to Enquire/Book directly with Choice Tours

Day one
The adventure begins with short transfer to Lanseria airport from where we fly to Inhambane, Mozambique. It is a typical little African airport and formalities can be tedious. Relax and enjoy... We pick up our air-conditioned 4x4 vehicles and immediately enter off road mode on the sandy tracks to Praia de Jangamo!

Days two and three
The six dives here are aimed specifically at finding mantas - and if we do not see them then the reef & scenery shall not disappoint you at all. The routine is to have something light to eat, do one dive, return for brunch, do the second dive, and then you have the vehicles at your disposal to explore the area at leisure.

Day four
After breakfast we travel via a combination of back and bigger roads through many colourful and vibrant villages. We stop for a picnic lunch overlooking the lakes before overnighting at Casa Lisa, a little haven in the middle of the bush near Maputo.

Day five
Maputo is a typical African city - bustling with people, travellers and traders, even on a Sunday:-) Things take their own time, so it is best for us to arrive early and secure our place on the ferry. If time allows we wander around the old city and visit the sights. We go tourist class - slightly up from sharing the decks with locals and their chickens, goats, building materials, trade stuff and whatever else can be carried aboard. We check in at the Pestana Inhaca and check out the island or relax at the pool.

Days six and seven
And Inhaca is a typical African Island - everything relaxed and laid back and Four dives on any of the rarely dived reefs around the island, chosen on the day depending on tide and conditions. The afternoons are free to explore, relax or go deep-sea fishing.

Day eight
We take the first ferry back to Maputo and load the vehicles onto the ferry that crosses the bay to Catembe. You will nothing less than Livingstone himself on this one:-). It becomes time to put your 4x4 lessons into practice when we tackle the "highway" to the south - it takes anything from 3 to 8 hours to cover the 160 odd kilometres that varies from dirt to potholed to sandy tracks!

Days nine to eleven
The coastline of Southern Mozambique is covered with the most beautiful and exquisite structures of hard and soft corals, home to myriads of game and reef fish, potato basses, rays, turtles, dolphins, whales, hammerheads and Zambezi sharks. Parque de Malongane offers you to dive 24 reefs, ranging from idyllic 8m to extreme deep blue 40m dives. The closest reef is only 300m offshore, with the furthest being about 7km boat ride. The reefs offer something for everyone, from Open Water to Advanced divers, from professional wide to micro photographers to just casual photo enthusiasts, for those who study corals and fish to those divers who only wish to appreciate fantastic world-class diving. The afternoons are free to explore the nearby villages or relax on the beach.

Day twelve
Time to start the 4x4 and lock the diffs! The last few kilometres to the South African border is sandy (or muddy) fun! We cross the border at Kosi Bay and from there we travel to Hluhluwe Game Reserve. Set in the heart of Zululand, the oldest game reserve in Africa where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws, where today the "big five" of African legend stalk the verdant savannah. A game drive sets the mood for dinner at the Mpunyane Restaurant. The award-winning Hilltop Camp on the summit of a forested hill offers fine views of the surrounding countryside.

Day thirteen
Up and go at the crack of dawn for a two to three hour game walk under the supervision of an experienced and armed field ranger. Experience the African bush as it is meant to be. A quick shower leaves enough time for a buffet breakfast before spending a few quiet hours at the pool, on the deck or in a hide. Lunch is light and in the late afternoon a sunset/night drive in open vehicles allows for the opportunity to discover the many nocturnal species that inhabit the park. Dinner is a social affair and you fall asleep with the sounds of Africa in your ears.

Day fourteen
After a last game drive we transfer via a scenic route to Johannesburg International Airport, getting there with a little time to spare for duty free shopping.
